TrainOps
It all started in May of 2010. Well, it probably started even way before that.
In 2008, Bob and I had visited Ottawa under the auspices of the American Invasion that summer.
During that session, we discussed the need for an easy to use Train Operations program that could produce switch lists for our small outdoor railroads.
From that discussion, TrainOps (the software program) was born.

TrainOps - Prequel
Now step ahead a few years, and Bob was having trouble getting his railroad running right - it was just too much work for one person to maintain.
So, in May 2010, he invited a bunch of us over to help him improve his railroad, and get it running right so we could have an operating session.
Since that time, TrainOps (the Train Operating Session) has become an annual event.

2010
The first “official” TrainOps was held on September 25-26, 2010.
This was a direct result of our work session held earlier in May.

2011
What a grand time! We arrived late Friday afternoon and headed over to check out the changes in person.
It's one thing to see pictures of the changes, but they always look better in person.
I really like the freight house and the car ferry.

At each town, there's a stand to hold the cards of all the cars that are currently there. You look through them to see if any should go with your train. As you drop a car at an industry or a yard, you also drop the card. Stan leaves his cars out between operating sessions, so this makes a lot of sense. There are lots of places to plug in the DCC controller as well.

2012
What a delightful weekend! It just doesn't get any better than this. Saturday dawned...or might have if the rain hadn't been pouring down.
But, by the time we were due over at Bob's it was already starting to clear. Bob has done a LOT of work since I last year and it really showed! Very impressive and a fun layout to operate on.

Jean is always the engineer, and that's Jon and Al in the background, walking towards Pearce.

This is a much larger layout and can easily support 15 trains at once. I thought I would have to twist Stan's arm to run one of the new C-19s he has, but he graciously let me have a go; this shot shows it going down hill towards Bat House Yard.
2013
This year, Bob decided to move TrainOps from September to August - it should give us a bit more daylight to operate.
Jean and I arrived Thursday afternoon as we wanted to do some birdwatching Friday morning.

Here's a nice short tunnel.

The rolling stock is set out in the yards from the storage sheds, and then sweeper trains take the cars to the correct destinations. Paul looks to be supervising, while Jon awaits commands.

Here you can see some of the hostas at Devil's Gate.

We take the Shay up to Solitude and get our waiting train.

2015
We return after missing last year and it is quite the fun event.
Jean and I arrived Thursday afternoon as we wanted to do some birdwatching Friday morning.
After some extremely clever moves on my part, we get everything switched and take the train back to Burke Yard. I'm rather crestfallen when Bob tells me I brought back the same two hoppers I took down and a boxcar that didn't belong. I still don't know what happened.
A schematic of the layout along with specific train instructions is on the back side of the clipboard.
2016
Another great year!
Jean and I arrived Thursday afternoon and head out to Walden Pond on Friday morning.
On the left: Franklin Falls, then Burke Yard, and the town of Williamsport. Leaving Williamsport, down the grade to Pearce - that's Goodson's with the 3 tank cars. The track circles down to Majestic. There's a branch line (to the right of Majestic Coal) that goes down to OakHill.
The main loops around crossing over the bridge and the trestle and finally ends up in Franklin Falls - far left in the back.
Ellen didn't want to push any buttons, so she chose to be the conductor; Randy would be the engineer. (I guess I didn't explain the jobs that well.)

2017
The fun continues.
Jean and I first head over to Assabet River NWR to check on the birds.
Williamsport in the foreground, Burke behind that and Franklin Falls is up against the fence.
Majestic is in the center, near the bridge. That's Pearce to the right. Downhill and way behind the bridge is Oak Hill.
Jean and I show up and are greeted by the dog alarm trio! (It's been a whole day since we saw them last!)
Sort of hard to see, but they're lined up in size order. Piper. Greta, Sophie. Jean is reflected in the glass.
After all the trains are run we have a dinner catered from Deven's Grill: lasagna, salad, and bread, with some of Martha's brownies. Yum!
Jean and Marilyn relax on the deck at Deck.
2019
We skipped last year as we were on a Family Reunion Cruise, so it was great to see everyone again this year. Since we were last here, the date has been moved from August to July - and NOW we got to see the garden in bloom!

Sunday, we descended on Stan & Deb.
Another HOT day, but funny thing is you didn't really notice WHILE you were running, but, wow...don't stop, or you just might collapse!
I really messed up on this day! I took out my little camera and it told me that it did not have enough power to even open the lens... Well, no problem, I guess I'll use my phone - ack - I forgot to charge it last night and it is down to 9%...so I only got a few more pictures before IT died...
Jean found a bench in the shade near Sublette.
