TrainOps

It all started in May of 2010.   Well, it probably started even way before that.

In 2008, Bob and I had visited Ottawa under the auspices of the American Invasion that summer.

During that session, we discussed the need  for an easy to use Train Operations program that could produce switch lists for our small outdoor railroads.

From that discussion, TrainOps (the software program) was born.

TrainOps - Prequel

Now step ahead a few years, and Bob was having trouble getting his railroad running right - it was just too much work for one person to maintain.

So, in May 2010, he invited a bunch of us over to help him improve his railroad, and get it running right so we could have an operating session.

Since that time, TrainOps (the Train Operating Session) has become an annual event.

I was amazed at how fast everything came together. When I built my layout single-handed it took months. Having more people seemed about 20 times faster than doing it myself. The other good thing is having extra sets of eyes to detect little bumps in the ladder or tilts to the sides.

Here Bob and Jon work on the upper siding - installing the ladder and setting it to the right grade. Ken and I work on re-doing the grade on the main. It was much too steep, but we quickly got it corrected. Again, just doing that part by myself might have taken me a couple of days.

The main line goes down the hill on the right side of the layout. At this point, we were having some tight spots on the loop in the back of the layout. In just about an hour's time, it was fixed. That meant moving quite a few of the posts and relocating the ladder on about a quarter of the loop. We also raised the track a bit as it crosses over the coal yard.

2010

The first “official” TrainOps was held on September 25-26, 2010.

This was a direct result of our work session held earlier in May.

September 25. Saturday. As usual, a typical operating session starts with setup of the rolling stock. Bob keeps his rolling stock in the shed, and we bring it out to the yard to get things going.

But, there are three industries on the siding...and naturally, we had to get the car at the very end - at Goodson's Batteries. So, we ended up pulling quite a few cars out.

September 17. It is operated with car cards. They are really nicely done - each one has a picture of the car and some basic information. The card is laminated and has a pocket to hold the next destination.

At each town, there's a stand to hold the cards of all the cars that are currently there. You look through them to see if any should go with your train. As you drop a car at an industry or a yard, you also drop the card. Stan leaves his cars out between operating sessions, so this makes a lot of sense. There are lots of places to plug in the DCC controller as well.

What a delightful weekend! It just doesn't get any better than this.  Saturday dawned...or might have if the rain hadn't been pouring down.

But, by the time we were due over at Bob's it was already starting to  clear. Bob has done a LOT of work since I last year and it really  showed! Very impressive and a fun layout to operate on.

Ellen didn't want to push any buttons, so she chose to be the conductor; Randy would be the engineer. (I guess I didn't explain the jobs that well.)

Well, we made it through Bat House Yard and got past Day Lily Junction, but we still need to keep going up hill.
And past one of the few buildings on this great layout. Well, I walk past it; the train didn't really go here.

Later, Bob and I take a train from Riley to Chama. Downhill, so we can take 12 cars! (And I get a great shot of his feet!) We were having some problems with the K, so I brought the boxcab over...but I wasn't sure it had enough charge left over from yesterday. Instead we just got another K-27)

2019

We skipped last year as we were on a Family Reunion Cruise, so it was great to see everyone again this year.    Since we were last here, the date has been moved from August to July - and NOW we got to see the garden in bloom!

July 25. Thursday. We drive to Littleton and spend some time with Bob & Martha. We got there early enough to relax with a glass of wine on their patio.

Martha showed off all the work they had done on the hillside. We were there 2 years ago in August, but they have since changed the date to July as there is much more in bloom. The yard was absolutely gorgeous everywhere you looked. She has even "upgraded" the front yard, even though there isn't any track there (yet).

Andy and Jane get ready to run around the layout. I built a coach for Bob. It's the BIG one: 50 scale feet.

It is just about impossible to get the entire layout in view...Burke Yard is just behind the tents - wow is the sun ever hot there!

July 28. So...Friday was run around and try to stay cool at Bob's, while Saturday was the actual day of operations at Bob's. Al also had an ops session on Friday morning, but we didn't make it - sure hope to next year!
Sunday, we descended on Stan & Deb.
Another HOT day, but funny thing is you didn't really notice WHILE you were running, but, wow...don't stop, or you just might collapse!

I really messed up on this day! I took out my little camera and it told me that it did not have enough power to even open the lens... Well, no problem, I guess I'll use my phone - ack - I forgot to charge it last night and it is down to 9%...so I only got a few more pictures before IT died...
Jean found a bench in the shade near Sublette.

Before I could even leave, I had a meet with the Misty Flyer, operated by Jane and Ken.
I ran about 4 more trains after that, including a real brain-teaser around big rock. What fun!
